Getting the Grill Ready for Spring

13081804_10207746393312120_580415024_nToday we are going to take a break from the indoor cleaning and if weather permits, we are going to get the grill ready. The summer is nearly upon us and readiness for grilling or smoking food is just around the corner. My mouth is watering as I am writing as I can’t wait to fire up the grill for some salmon cooked on a cedar plank with amaretto sauce. So, in excited preparation, we are going to clean the grill and get ready for the spring!

To clean the grill, you will need:

  • A sturdy wire brush
  • Steel wool (fine)
  • Water

Cleaning the grill is just not a man’s job! I grill more than my husband as I love grilled vegetables. Start by removing the grill cover (invest in one if you don’t have one). Open the grill and ensure that it is turned off. Using the wire brush, scrub the grates until all burnt particles have been removed. Take the grates off and clean out underneath to remove any debris from the previous season and leaves that may have blown up underneath the grill. Replace the grates and close the lid. Now, clean the outside of the grill by rubbing lightly with a little fine steel wool dipped in hot, soapy water to remove dirt and grease. Check the propane hook up to make certain it is functional if you have a propane grill. Once you have finished, return the cover to the grill.

Note: a black colored grill can be freshened with Hi-Heat Spray paint. Clean the outside of the grill thoroughly and follow the directions on the can of paint. This specialized paint can be purchased an any home improvement store and will rejuvenate your grill thereby extending the life of your investment.

Now check for fuel for the grill:

If you have a charcoal grill or smoker, make a list of things you will need to begin grilling/smoking. Purchase charcoal and wood chips in advance to have on hand for when the big day arrives.

Propane/ Gas Grills:

Check your tank to ensure that it is full. If not, put it on your list to get enough fuel to have on hand. It is very frustrating to prepare all the food to go on the grill and find that there is no propane in the tank.  The next time you are out and about, stop and pick up more propane to be ready for the first warm days and grill baby grill.

Father’s Day is around the corner and putting together these grill supplies will serve as a nice Father’s Day gift for dear, ole dad.  Charcoal, wood chips, matches, a long lighter, aluminum foil, pot holders, starter fluid and other necessities can be purchases in put into a basket, box or bin to give as a thoughtful gift to the man in your life. Consider purchasing a new grilling utensil kit and a gift card to the local butcher to reward him for his support and parenting/partnering.
