The most difficult part of implementing the strategies is getting started. When you lack experience organizing and modifying your life, it is rather intimidating. Don’t despair. The Transformational Organization process will keep you motivated, engaged and on a path to experience positive achievement. We will begin by organizing specific items to develop a pattern of success. Then we will move on to organizing and cleaning rooms. Then we will tackle peripheral areas such as our cars, garages, attic spaces and others. Just think, in the next 15 minutes, you will have taken the first step in changing your life for the better. Take a deep breath, one more and now… begin.
Happy New Year!
The Transformational Organizational process was designed as a process that begins on the New Year. However, each section in the series can be a starting point to the Transformational Organizational process. Whichever method you choose, over the course of this year you are going to transform your life regardless of where you choose to begin the process. The transformation will happen gradually and in layers, not all at once. You and your home will go through a process of change that will result in a peaceful, more effective home climate and a happier, healthier, more beautiful you.
Changes in small increments are the changes that last. Reflect back over the New Year’s resolutions that you have made in the past. You were enthusiastic and eager to get started. Then you began to wane… then you gave up. Why? You took on too much all at once and it was like diving into cold water. Frigid water is a shock to your system and makes you feel overwhelmed very quickly. The changes that you will make during the Transformational Organizational process are day by day and subtle but will build up to an overall transformational change in the end. Through the Transformational Organization process, you will in fact be successfully implementing every past New Year’s resolution. Whether your past resolution was to take better care of yourself, lose weight, get organized, clear out clutter, or to enjoy more time with family, friends and engaging in activities that you love, you will successfully complete all of those in one process. I will serve as your advocate and help you to renovate your life step by step. We will start small, and build on each day’s successes; a little at a time. However, this time our metaphorical water will be warmer and soothing to your spirit as you immerse yourself a little at a time into the new habits that you will begin to build. The foundational construct in this process is incremental change in small, easy steps.
The way to accomplish any goal is to break it down in a small set of tasks and accomplish them one at a time. Today, we will begin together. Step by step; day by day. At the end of this year, you will see the significant changes that you have made and the enormous differences in your life. Motivation is the key. At first, we will use external motivation to help you to maintain your momentum. Then gradually, as you see your success and reap the benefits of your actions, the motivation will become intrinsic and more powerful. Intrinsic motivation is the key to long lasting success in the dynamics of change. In his book, Leading in a Culture of Change, Michael Fullan refers to the “constellation of Energy-Enthusiasm – and-Hopefullness. “ I am going to borrow that model in order to design a framework for change for you. Leadership theory scholars recognize that in order for change to occur, you must begin by developing a vision of what you desire. This is the most critical component in change. You must develop your vision of an orderly, reduced-stress life and create an expectation of what you desire from this process. As you go through the Transformational Organizational process, you will begin to define and refine your vision. This vision is the hopefullness component in our constellation of success. The energy will come as you get started and begin to see the results. The enthusiasm will also develop as you enjoy your small successes that will eventually lead to your vision and the new life that you are creating for yourself. Are you ready?
I am right here with you and energized and enthusiastic as well as hopeful as I know that you are going to be so very happy as a result of this process.
Caveats to remember as we go through this process…
Use It Or Lose It: Capitalize on Your Resouces
Your philosophies for this year are “Use it or lose it” and “Capitalize on Your Resources.” You have purchased and collected all the things that you have for one purpose: to use it and enrich your life. Perhaps some of the purchases were on impulse. Some you carefully considered. In either case, you had some idea of how it could be used to make you happier. I know that material things by themselves, won’t make you happy. However, they can make you more satisfied and comfortable in your life. In many cases, these things are purchased, put away, and eventually forgotten. This is a waste of time, money and space. One of the most frequent comments that I hear from people is, “I have had that for so long and never used it.” Other people explain that they just don’t know that to do with some of the things that they have purchased once they got them home. This has resulted in overwhelming clutter, chaos, and hopelessness. I am here to help you with these issues. Together we will create new uses for things that you already have and finally use some of those items that you collected for the purpose of enriching your life. There will be some items that you will part with but through the Transformational Organizational process, you will feel comfortable with the parting process.
An important mandate in the Transformational Organization process is that before you begin any task or goal, make sure that you have a healthy, water-based beverage ready. According to the Mayo Clinic (2008), dehydration can cause symptoms of tiredness, weakness, dizziness and fatigue. When you are dehydrated, you lose energy and therefore, you won’t have the energy to accomplish our mission. Throughout the Transformational Organizational process, you will need to stay hydrated. Drinking more water is an important step in developing healthier habits and critical for the transformational process. Quite simply, drinking plenty of water daily is one of the first steps to accomplish our organizational mission and of transforming your life.
To illustrate this caveat, the Associated Bodyworks and Massage Professionals (2007) stated, “One bit of advice you’ll hear over and over again is to drink plenty of water after a massage. Bodywork — no matter the particular modality — releases toxins, such as lactic acid and carbonic acid, which need to be flushed from the body.” While you are moving your body, your muscles release toxins and drinking water flushes out these toxins. Applying this information to an everyday context, one would then infer that if you are moving about during daily tasks or exercising, you are using your muscles causing them to release toxins. Therefore, water is needed to flush out the toxins or you may feel fatigued and suffer from a lack of motivation. You may not feel as though you are using your muscles, but you are indeed using them as you go about your routines. In fact, a person who weighs 150 pounds burns up to 204 calories per hour working around the house attending to daily chores!
When you add some exercise during the Transformational Organization process, you will definitely need to drink water or a water-based beverage to cleanse your body. Whatever you need to increase your fluid intake is a personal choice but refrain from anything that zaps your energy or ultimately results in your losing more water such as sugar, alcohol, and caffeine. Filtered water on ice with a slice of lemon is refreshing. Herbal tea is great for the colder months. Sugarless, fruit-flavored water is a great way to increase your intake as it tastes delicious and adds essential vitamins. Whatever your preference, make sure you have plenty available to drink during your Transformational Organizational activities and throughout your day. Here’s a thought, utilize one of those lovely glass or crystal pitchers that are in the back of your kitchen cabinet. Add ice, beverage and pick a wonderful crystal goblet. Why not pamper yourself while you work?
Grab that pitcher and goblet and go to the next section called Health and Beauty Routines where you will incorporate health and beauty routines while you progress to enhance your inner and outer beauty.
