Today we are going to care for our crystal items. Crystal adds a touch of elegance and glamour to your home. Whether you have crystal vases or goblets or crystal service wear, using your crystal will make your home sparkle especially in bright sunlight. To clean crystal, I like to use warm water with vinegar to cleanse and remove oil and dust. I use a very soft cloth and then dry with a clean, lint free towel such as a bar towel. Only wash one piece at a time to prevent chipping.

So, gather all your crystal items and put on the kitchen counter. Begin washing and drying. Asses your items and check for damage. High quality crystal that have small chips or “fleabites” can be repaired by a professional. Items that are badly chipped need to be recycled as these could be dangerous if used. Once all your crystal is cleaned, inventory and photograph your items for insurance purposes.

Crystal items add a bit of romance to the bathroom and bedroom. Crystal containers look amazing filled with scented bath salts, soaps or bath beads. A crystal decanter can be filled with ice water to put by the bed before you retire for the evening. Crystal decanters can also be used for infused oils and vinegars and look stunning in your pantry. You can also make your own vanilla, berry and citrus extracts by adding vanilla beans, berries or citrus peels to the decanter and adding vodka. Let this sit for days or a week (the larger the decanter, the longer you need to let it sit). Then strain the vodka and voila’, you have fresh extracts for baking or giving as a gift. I like to keep my cooking oils in beautiful decanters. It makes my cooking experience elegant and grand.

Once you have finished, plan a celebration to use your crystal. You can purchase an inexpensive bottle of champagne or sparkling wine or if preferred, a bottle of sparkling apple or grape juice. Prepare a special dinner for your family and use your crystal pieces. What joy something so simple can bring to your daily life. Small daily celebrations add happiness to yourself and those around you. Enjoy using the things you have to enhance your life. It makes a big difference.
