This is our last day of Thematic Organizing. Today we are going to gather our table linens. Table cloths, runners, napkins and the like can all be used for enhancing our dining and decor. Let’s get all these items together and find the best solution for storage. Remember to check linen closet, attic or other storage spaces for those vintage, heirloom linens.
Now that we have gathered the linens, let’s determine what we need to do in the way of cleaning and storage. I prefer my tablecloths to be dry cleaned. This gives them a very polished and starched look which adds sophistication to your table. Many tablecloths and napkins can be washed in the washer and ironed (spray starch works well to remove wrinkles and give them the starched look). Once cleaned and iron, you can either fold neatly and store in a chest or drawer or you can hang them. I use wooden garment hangers instead of wire hangers so they don’t crease. You can use inexpensive wire hangers by cutting a cardboard paper towel roll. Cut it length wise and slip it over the hanger. Then carefully lay your linens across. You can also store these items in a cloth garment bag designed for coats or long dresses. This will help to keep dust and odors out.
If you have linens that are stained, they may still be used in other ways. Use the areas of the fabric that are not stained to make beautiful baby blankets. You can fold the fabric over in half and then sew a blanket binding around the perimeter. You can quilt or tie the blanket to enhance the sophistication of the item. Try using satin or silk ribbon to tie the blanket or quilt. These are great for baby or christening gifts especially if the gift is for a younger relative and you are using family heirloom linens.
